Operational Guidelines for Passengers with Illness
Most passengers are in suitable health and can tolerate air travel conditions well. However, sometimes among passengers, there are sick individuals for whom flight conditions can lead to a deterioration of their health. Generally, passengers who travel by air with illness can be categorized into two groups:
- The first group includes those who travel for purposes such as pilgrimage, tourism, visiting family members, etc. and they are simultaneously sick. Most passengers fall into this category and usually have no problems during flight.
- The second group consists of individuals for whom illness is the primary reason for travel, such as seeking treatment or specialist health consultation. Although this group forms a tiny portion of plane passengers, they are usually unable to care for themselves during the flight and need assistance or companionship. Moreover, flight conditions, like reduced air pressure and oxygen, can exacerbate their illness and worsen their condition. The physical limitations of the aircraft cabin, along with the psychological stress and excitement induced by flying, can also be problematic.
In general, all patients with unstable conditions are required to obtain medical clearance for flight. The airline’s medical center is responsible for decision-making regarding these passengers and is the only authority that can issue a flight permit for a sick passenger, specifying the conditions, facilities, or restrictions under which they can travel. In this context, the treating physician’s opinion is considered merely a recommendation, and the final decision lies with the airline’s medical center.
Note: If a passenger arrives at the airport contrary to the rules and conditions stated in the “Operational Guidelines for Passengers with Illnesses,” their flight will be prevented, and the ticket cost will be refunded to the passenger after deducting a penalty percentage.
